Recent graduate and Biology and Global Studies: Environments and Sustainability double major, Samantha "Sam" Hunt received the 2019 UVA Sustainability Award. The award is given to a member of the UVA’s student body, faculty, or staff who has become a leader in sustainability with great contributions to make Grounds greener. The awardee, who is chosen based on his/her contributions to achieving the UVA Sustainability Plan’s goals, receives $500, recognition at the SustainaBanquet, and a locally made gift. The SustainaBanquet, in its sixth year, celebrated the successes of the sustainability community on Grounds, as well as other champions of green leadership.

“… one of my most rewarding accomplishments has been working for the university’s Office for Sustainability for the past three years. As the leader of the Recycling team, I have organized countless environmental outreach efforts, volunteer events, and behavior change campaigns regarding reduction of single-use plastics and proper waste diversion. This position really made me feel like I was making a difference at UVA as I was able to directly see the results of my efforts and know I was helping reduce our waste as a university," said Sam.

In terms of next steps, Sam is hoping that UVA makes a greater effort to reduce or eliminate single-use items on Grounds. And as for personal endeavors, she will begin the next chapter of her life in Washington, D. C., hoping to “work on projects dealing with waste minimization, community resiliency, or fostering global partnerships.” Good luck Sam! We can’t wait to see where your bright, green future takes you.
