In May 2022, two large cranes moved a 50-ton storage tank into place at the North Chiller Plant as part of the Low Temperature Hot Water Conversion project.
The tank is roughly 14 feet in diameter and 50 feet tall. It will support a large heat recovery chiller that was installed earlier in the year. When operational, this new system will be the one of only a few of this kind in the world.
The heating and cooling produced from this electric system will displace fossil fuel use at the North Grounds Heat Plant and help UVA achieve its goal to be carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil fuel-free by 2050.
