Plastic Recycling FAQ

I have heard that since China’s plastic waste ban went into effect in January 2018, plastics #3-7 do not really get recycled. Does UVA’s #3-7 plastics really get recycled or do they just get sent to a landfill or stockpiled somewhere?

Yes, your plastics #3-7, which are separated on Grounds, are really being recycled. Our mixed plastics are being separated by the type of plastic and recycled by a contracted company in a material recovery facility in Raleigh, NC. Our contract requires that all of our plastics will be recycled. Those plastics are being sent to mills in the Raleigh, North Carolina region.
