Sustainability Partners

The mission of Sustainability Partners is to actively engage UVA employees in cultivating a community that embraces sustainable stewardship and practices. Sustainability Partners advocate and promote initiatives that reduce energy and water use, minimize waste, promote community, and enhance well-being.

Through bi-monthly meetings (total of 6 meetings per year), the Sustainability Partners group will provide opportunities for members to:

  1. Learn from experts and local sustainability heroes
  2. Share ideas for implementing and maintaining Green Workplace Program (GWP) actions
  3. Receive updates and discuss current events in Sustainability at UVA
  4. Build community with like-minded colleagues

Accomplishments

Through Sustainability Partners, employees have helped shape:

  • Reminder signs, such as "Try Just One" and "Flip the Switch."
  • Development and promotion of UVA Sustainability Pledge
  • Creation of an online training program, Sustainability at UVA: You Can Make a Positive Difference, offered through UVA Human Resources.

September 13: Which CSA might be right for you?
Lunch from Feast provided!
Time & Location: Noon - 1:00pm in Newcomb Hall Gallery
Speaker: Jess Palmer from the Piedmont Environmental Council.
Current Events & Relevant Green Workplace Actions: UVA Food Collaborative, Sustainable Food Strategy Task Force, zero waste events, bulk ordering, sustainable wares, etc.

October 17: How “green” is the Rotunda?
Group photo to be taken at start!
Time & Location:4:00-5:00pm meet on Lawn side of Rotunda
Speaker: Brian Hogg, Senior Historic Preservation Planner, will give us a quick (30 minute) behind-the-scenes tour of the UVA Rotunda.
Current Events & Relevant GWP Actions: Energize UVA, UVA Sustainability Day, IT settings, appliance and printer consolidation, etc.

February 15: What is Cradle2Cradle Design?
Time & Location:Noon-1:00pm in Newcomb Hall Gallery
Lunch from Rev Soup provided!
Speaker: Ken Alston, MBDC’s CEO and President of Consulting and Education Services will join us to share a short 20-minute introduction to how “Cradle to Cradle” could transform our world for the better.
Current Events & Relevant GWP Actions: RecycleMania, Integrated Waste Management, green procurement, etc.

April 13: Sustainability Partners Social
Time & Location:4:00-6:00pm at Fry’s Spring Station (2115 Jefferson Park Ave)
There will be no guest speaker or agenda for this meeting. We would just like to take some time to enjoy some good food, get to know each other outside of meetings, and strengthen our community of sustainably-minded UVA employees!

May 16: What will “Streets That Work” look like?
Time & Location:Noon-1:00pm in Newcomb Hall Gallery
Lunch from Sticks provided!
Speaker: Amanda Poncy, Charlottesville’s Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator, will share a 20-minute highlight of the Streets That Work project
Current Events & Relevant GWP Actions: Bike to Work Day, Bike Month events, green travel, alternative transit options, etc.

July 12: Why cultivate a mindfulness practice?
Time & Location:4:00-5:00pm at the Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) Multi-Purpose Room 4
One-time AFC access for members and non-members alike!
Speaker: Leslie Hubbard from the Contemplative Sciences Center will lead us through some very low-impact exercises
Current Events & Relevant GWP Actions: Hoos Well, ramping up for Academic Year 17-18, walking meetings, workplace comfort, etc.
