UVA is proud to partner with a wide range of educational, nonprofit, public, and other entities to achieve our shared sustainability goals. 


The University of Virginia Committee on Sustainability (CoS) announces its first round of grants to support Grounds engaged learning related to sustainability at UVA.

Plans & Progress

The 2020-2030 UVA Sustainability Plan will guide UVA’s progress for the decade ahead to ENGAGE our community to build sustainability awareness and equity, STEWARD our resources on Grounds and beyond, and DISCOVER solutions to global challenges through research, curriculum, and Grounds-engaged learning.

Teaching & Research Sub-committee

The Teaching and Research Sub-committee (T&R) develops pan-University opportunities for interdisciplinary sustainability teaching and research. The sub-committee aligns its work with existing processes for curriculum development and research funding.

Environmental Stewardship Sub-committee

The Environmental Stewardship Sub-committee (ESS) advances environmental stewardship on Grounds, resulting in measurable results and accountability toward achieving the University’s overall goal of being carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil fuel free by 2050. ESS is focused on using the Grounds as a means of learning and engagement with sustainability. There are several working groups within the subcommittee, across topic areas.

Civic Engagement Sub-committee

The Civic Engagement Sub-committee (CES) extends and deepens sustainability collaboration in the UVA and Charlottesville/Albemarle communities. CES engages and advocates for policies and practices that build an inclusive, safe, healthy, and equitable community for current and future generations.

The Committee on Sustainability advises the Executive Vice Presidents on all matters related to the University’s commitment to sustainability and how those impact the future of the University including interrelated environmental, financial, teaching, research, and social aspects
