Buildings & Operations
With over 525 buildings encompassing 16.5 million square feet, the University of Virginia has the opportunity to use the operation of all its facilities to demonstrate its strong commitment to sustainability. The design, operation and maintenance of Grounds and all its components requires a huge amount of resources. Fortunately, though, countless sustainability champions at all levels in all units are working to ensure that everyone at U.Va. can live, work and learn in a sustainable place.
The University is using the LEED Certification System to ensure that all new construction meets green building standards. Existing buildings are being upgraded to maximize energy and resource efficiency through the Delta Force Program. Efforts are even being made in the areas of information technology (IT), purchasing, cleaning, and landscaping to decrease our impact on the environment and increase the efficiency of our operations.
