Earth Week is a UVA tradition that celebrates the planet we all share. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to take part in a thought provoking, action packed week, with over 20+ events happening April 17-23. Participate in environmental service, connect with our community-based food systems, support social justice, celebrate major accomplishments, and more. All events are free and open to the public.

Join Green Grounds, Project Peanut Butter, Challah for Hunger, and FeelGood at UVA for our third annual “Hunger Alliance”, a stimulating student and faculty round table discussion and dinner to understand what global hunger is and the role that you can play in addressing it. We will present information on and discuss how food sustainability and differing social groups (such as refugees, women, etc.) pertain to global hunger. University and community partners will provide interactive tabling activities and green DIY projects you can take home! At 12:30, join Governor McAuliffe for the dedication of the latest on-Grounds solar array on Clemons Library at the Solar Ribbon Cutting. A reception provided by UVA Dining and a student research symposium featuring sustainability- and food-related student projects will follow from 1:00-2:30pm in the Gallery. Trail Trek: Celebrate Earth Week with a 1.5 mile walk on the O’Hill trails! Explore the trails with us and learn about the history of O’Hill. Meet at the front steps of Ern Commons at 3:45 PM. We’ll be back at Ern Commons by 4:45 PM.

SustainaPitch Night: Social Justice Edition

Looking for funding for your project? Green Grounds, UVA Sustainability, the Minority Rights Coalition, and Hackcville are hosting the second annual SustainaPitch Night: Social Justice Edition on Thursday April 20, from 5:30-7:00 PM at Open Grounds. Free Mellow Mushroom will be provided. The event will consist of pitches for projects that explore environmental and equitable themes from students, CIOs, faculty, and staff. As an event attendee, you will have the opportunity to listen to pitches, vote for your favorite projects, and you will help choose which winning projects are awarded funding. Contestants will participate in either the Large Category to win up to $1,500 or the Small Category to win up to $500. If you are interested in attending the event as an audience member or submitting a pitch proposal, sign up!

If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please answer all the questions on the second page of the sign up form. The deadline to submit your proposal is Friday, April 14th at noon. Individuals, teams, faculty, CIOs, etc. are encouraged to apply (grants may be used to fund research, supplies, and much more). Composting Panel and Landfill Harmonic Film Screening

Join UVA students at 7pm for a reception and info session on two new compost pilots occurring on grounds! Come learn how residential programs in Brown and the International Residential College enable students to divert significant organic and paper waste from landfill. Then at 8pm, join Contemplation@UVA for a screening of the 2015 documentary film “Landfill Harmonic” which follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. The Virginia Women’s Chorus will perform folk, country, and contemporary music to celebrate the beauty of Earth. UVA Bluegrass will join the Chorus for a set of Wailin’ Jennys songs and a variety of music will include accompaniment by oboe, flute, piano, and percussion. The Chorus is excited to partner with Climate Action Society, Greens to Grounds and the Office of Sustainability, for this event who will have tables after the concert to give out information and/or free swag! Bike Maintenance for Everyone

Learn how to do basic repairs on your bicycle with Community Bikes! These classes will cover one topic at a time, with hands on instruction from our volunteer mechanics. No experience is required, and we will provide tools, a work stand, and a bike to practice on. You are welcome to bring you own bike to work on as well. The class is from 5-7pm, with the first hour being instruction and a hands-on demonstration, and the last hour being for questions and as much practice as desired.
