UVA has joined the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council, a coalition of corporations, higher education institutions, government and non-profits with the mission of “driving positive impact through the power of procurement."

The SPLC leverages hundreds of billions of dollars in purchasing power to influence positive environmental and social change in the supply chain.

Sustainable procurement initiatives are core to the University’s 2030 Sustainability Plan, particularly UVA’s goal to reduce waste by 70% (relative to 2010 levels) by 2030. One of the most effective ways to reduce waste is through product reuse, repair and remanufacturing. SPLC provides category-specific resources across multiple disciplines to help purchasers across the University make informed decisions about responsible sourcing. Through SPLC, UVA has access to robust and comprehensive resources across disciplines and a collaborative network of leaders in both sustainability and procurement.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to create an account to access the online community and resources. According to Mark Cartwright, Senior Director of Procurement & Supplier Diversity Services for UVA, “The SPLC connects members to best-in-class sustainable procurement expertise including one-on-one training, a network of engaged peers, and practical guidance that includes case studies, webinars, contract language, tools, and category-specific resources.”

For those who are interested in being more involved in sustainable purchasing initiatives at UVA, consider joining the Sustainable Procurement Working Group.
