Break Up with your K-Cup
This February, show the planet and your budget some love by joining the Office for Sustainability in reducing single-use coffee pods across our UVA workplaces.
Why It Matters
Waste: UVA buys over 7,700 boxes of disposable coffee pods every year, and most of them end up in landfills. If you stacked all those pods, they’d reach the height of the Rotunda every single workday!
Every reusable pod or alternative brewing method can keep hundreds of plastic pods out of the landfill to help the UVA community reduce waste.
Costs: Each office can cut coffee costs by up to 66% (two-thirds!) by switching from single-use K-Cups to reusable pods with ground coffee or by using alternative brewing methods.
How It Works
- Sign the Break Up With Your K-Cup Pledge by February 27.
- Receive a Sustainable Coffee Tip Sheet with alternatives for your office.
- Implement actions and post an informational sign (from UVA Sustainability) in your workplace near your coffee maker.
The Upside for Your Workplace
In addition to cost savings and waste reduction, the first 15 workplaces to pledge will receive a sustainable coffee kit, including a set of stainless-steel reusable k-cups and a bag of local coffee from Kindness Café.
Workplaces that maintain their pledge for 12 months are entered into a raffle to win a catered coffee break with pastries from a local business to share with their colleagues.
