LEED Buildings at UVA

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design logo - a grey circle with LEED over leaves

UVA hosts one of the largest and most diverse LEED-certified building portfolios in the world, including:

  • 90 LEED-certified projects

  • Over 5 million square feet of certified building area

  • 3 LEED certifications within UVA's UNESCO World Heritage site

The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system evaluates buildings based on sustainable design and construction practices. As the world's most widely-used green building rating system, LEED offers a reliable framework for incorporating green building techniques into new construction and renovation projects. All LEED-certified buildings must meet a range of requirements that prioritize environmental stewardship and human health. Superlative recognition (e.g., Silver, Gold, Platinum) is awarded for projects that go above and beyond in their pursuit of strategies related to energy and water efficiency, occupant health and comfort, and other low-impact, innovative design strategies. Since 2007, UVA has required that all capital building projects achieve LEED certification.
