A Natural Space Tucked Near Grounds

There's nothing like a walk in the woods -- or a run, or a bike ride -- to deflate stress, get exercise and feel renewed. And there's just the place to do that, right here on Grounds.

Unbeknownst to many, there lies a lovely network of wooded trails right on the edge of Grounds. Used for hiking, running, mountain biking or simply stepping away from the busy-ness of college life, the O-Hill trails are easily accessible to all at UVA. Their proximity to dorms makes them an especially exciting place for first-year students to explore.

Some students, like Cameron Burke, have been using the trails avidly ever since coming to UVA. “My first year, O-Hill trails were my closest link to nature. I would go on quick trail runs and walks between classes and made some great memories going on night hikes there with friends. I’m super grateful that the trails are there for students with an itch to get outside, even for just a few minutes.”

For others, like Anusha Jain, the trails have been a place of calm and contemplation. “No matter the season, the trails always feel magical and like there’s more I could learn from them. They’re like a little home away from home here at UVA.”

To reach the trails, walk up McCormick Road, past Slaughter Recreation Center and the Kellogg bus stop. Continue up the large hill until you reach the top. Take a right at the intersection to stay on McCormick and continue uphill. After a few minutes, just past the large green water tanks, you’ll see a gravel area on the left with a few parking spaces. This is one of the entrances to the trail system.

Community members and students work hard to maintain these trails. Each trail loop is marked by a different color (blue, green, black) which you can follow to navigate. Remember to stay on the trail to avoid disrupting the natural habitat and carry out trash that you may have with you.

So next time you’re heading back to dorms, or have some time to kill between classes, bring a friend and walk the trails / paint / have a jam session / take a nice nap. The woods are waiting for you!
