In June, UVA began its inaugural Summer Decarbonization Academy. Thirteen students invested in sustainability have spent the past few weeks diving into projects addressing several aspects of decarbonization at the university. Examples include building electrification, carbon offsetting, and occupant behavior change.

Griffin Lab wins Shut Sash 2021
Researchers participating in the “Shut the Sash Challenge” saved an estimated $2,800 in energy costs in one month. The challenge is hosted by the Office for Sustainability to promote safe and sustainable fume hood management practices in labs across Grounds.

Grounds as a Living Lab

Connecting academics and operations is a unique strength of higher education to lead and innovate sustainability solutions.  At UVA, faculty, students and staff partner on a range of experiential projects in several courses to connect global ideas to local implementation, strengthening both curricula and the stewardship of Grounds.

Climate Action & Energy

In 2011, the University set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% below 2009 levels by 2025. We achieved that goal in 2019, six years ahead of schedule, and are now aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil free by 2050.
