Steps for a Sustainable Move-in

Hey new Hoos! As move-in day approaches, we know you’re thinking about what to pack. There is no shortage of resources telling you what to pack to make your first year the best that it can be. Read on for a list of ways to make your move-in more environmentally friendly!

While you are thinking about how to cram that extra mirror into the back of your car, the Office for Sustainability has a few sustainable move-in tips to make your packing more efficient and more sustainable:

1. Pack smart!

Pack your clothes, shoes, and belongings in reusable containers that you can use for storage and later for move out! Ikea bags, plastic containers, or baskets are great ways to transport your things both in and out of your room, and can be used for storage throughout the school year.

2. Bring Less Stuff

While on the topic of packing, be prepared to part ways with some of your clothes from home. You probably won’t need to bring 11 t-shirts (UVA will give you plenty). If you do end up with extra clothes, or you realize it’s time for a wardrobe change, look around Grounds for a clothing swap, where you can donate or exchange your clothes for free!

3. Wrap Your Valuables Well

For all the breakables that you may be bringing to Grounds, think twice about how you are transporting them. Consider swapping out the bubble wrap for a blanket or t-shirt that you are already bringing. Get creative about ways to pack sustainably!

4. Arrive on Time

When you start getting closer to that move in date, check your email and make sure that you arrive during your allotted move in-time. There will be a team of upperclassmen to help you carry all of your belongings up to your room, which will help you to cut down on the carbon emissions from your vehicle!

5. Cardboard Collection

Once you get to your room, unload your car, and meet your roommate, you’ll start unpacking (yay!). Chances are you brought something that came in a cardboard box. Make sure that those boxes make it in our Mixed Paper recycling bins, not the dumpster! UVA’s recycling team collects a lot of cardboard every move-in, and we would love your help in supporting them.

We’re so excited to welcome you to Grounds this fall, and as you’re getting settled into your new home, we hope that you will take a moment to look at the resources that we have available to you. On top of composting and recycling, you have opportunities to get involved with our student-led programs, take sustainability centered classes, or find an environmentally friendly CIO. Stop by the Green Your Dorm event at the student garden on August 25th to grab a succulent and learn more about our ROSE program.  Follow us on social media (@sustainableuva) or join our newsletter to keep updated!
